When people work out budgets and cut out the unnecessary expenses in their lives, many will still fail to acknowledge some of their vices that are honestly more luxury than necessity. But it is those vices that we overlook that could end up costing us a fortune in the long term and that money spent could be better served being paid towards debt.
Smoking Your Way Through Debt
One big vice is cigarettes. Now, after yet another price increase in many areas, cigarettes can cost a consumer on average of $5 a pack or more. Smoking a pack a day equals $35 a week, $140 a month, and incredibly $1680 a year!! Imagine putting close to $2000 towards your outstanding debts. Even tacking an extra $140 dollars towards you monthly bills can make quite a big difference in finding debt freedom. Additionally, those who partake in the smoking vice will also be more susceptible to costly medical treatment ranging from short term illnesses like bronchitis to long-term problems like cancer and emphysema. Cutting out the smoking vice from your life may initially cost some cash for supplements and treatment, the cost it will save you in the long run will be substantial.
Drinking the Troubles Away
Drinking alcohol can also cost you a decent amount of money that can be better used against debt. While the occasional glass of wine is not much to be concerned about, drinking can lead to bad money habits in general. Sitting in a bar, drinking expensive drinks on a weekly basis can hurt a budget easily. It can also cause bigger financial problems when drinking becomes an area of concern in your life and you find yourself in trouble with the law, resulting in traffic tickets, lawyer fees, and potentially costly accidents. Drinking can also take a toll on your health, especially if drinking increases due to your stress over finances.
Vices may be something you swear you can’t live without but the reality is your vices are costly and can be hampering your efforts to live a debt-free life. While finances can be stressful and make it seemingly harder to give up the comforts of smoking or drinking, realistically cutting out the vices from your life will make you feel better, reduce the stress, and help you pay off your bills – all sound reasons worth quitting for and striving towards. Make stopping all the bad habits become incorporated with stopping the bad money habits.
