Save Your Money Tips: Ditch the Disposables

Companies are making more and more products to suit the convenience needs of the public. So much of the items you spend money on at the store just ends up disappearing right after you use them. That’s because there is more items that are made to be used once or twice and then disposed of. These disposable items may seem like the ultimate in convenience but they are also a source of wasted money. When you throw away that next paper plate, envision your money going along with it. Plus, many disposable items are not too great for the environment either.

Here are some of the most common items we throw out without a second thought and how to trade in the disposable choices for more money-savvy ones.

Newspapers

While newspapers are important for many reasons, there is virtually no need to get one from your doorstep each and every morning. Many newspapers now offer online editions. It may not be the same as the full newspaper you are used to but for the top stories, want ads and obituaries, it can be a great and free alternative.

 Magazines

Magazines are a great source of entertainment but they are also a costly luxury. Keeping the subscription costs down can be accomplished by visiting the library and borrowing the magazines for free. Many libraries are making upgrades that offer free coffee and a cozy reading space, much like the more-expensive designer coffee shops.

Paper Plates and Cups

Replace paper plates and cups with dollar store ware that can be washed and reuse, allowing you to eat your dinner without having to pull out all of the big dinnerware or lugging it with you to work. You won’t need them to be replaced as often as you do a new paper plate.

Tissues and Paper Towels

Tissues are so convenient but there is nothing wrong with a good old fashioned handkerchief or old bandana. Instead of throwing away mounds of used tissues, you can simply toss your hanky into the wash and have a fresh new one ready for use with no additional costs. Instead of using paper towels for cleaning, save old t-shirt and towels and cut up into good sized rags for quick clean ups instead of grabbing for a paper towel each time you want to dry your hands or clean up a spill.

Daily Use Items

We take for granted just always having what we need when we need it. Daily use items like toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, and soap can be used more efficiently with a little effort. Pay attention to how much shampoo you squeeze into your hand each time versus how much you really need. You’ll find that with a little effort and consciousness, your daily use items will last much longer.
