Good or bad, we all have money habits. Sometimes we inherit these habits from our parents or grandparents. Sometimes we follow the lead of people we admire. Sometimes we just get into the habit of doing things the way we do them and never think twice about changing the habits for the better.
Like many bad habits, we have the power to change what isn’t working and try doing something else until we can figure out what is working. With money habits, there is not much difference. Most bad habits continue because we stop making decisions about certain areas of our lives. After practicing bad habits for a long period of time, we can often feel guilty about participating in the habits. Much like a smoker who feels bad about harming their health, a person with bad money habits will feel guilty about spending money. Typically, the bad habits will continue because the negative connotations of admitting there is a problem and having to put forth energy to change does not always appeal to people. Only some will only tend to change their habits when the guilt becomes too much.
Changing your habits sometimes just means changing your thinking and your focus in life. If you are sick of living paycheck to paycheck, instead of wallowing in how much it sucks to be broke each month, focus your energies on ideas for generating more income. Turn the negative thinking to positive planning. Transition the bad habit of overspending your money into a good habit of saving your money.
If you have been overspending or just not handling your money correctly, there is not point in beating yourself for the choices you have made in the past. You need instead to focus on the future and the good money habits you want to develop, including savings plans, investment ideas, and overall better money management and budgeting. Think about all the energies you put into worrying every night how you are going to survive, put food on the table, make your mortgage payment. Whether you realize it or not, those kind of money worries take energy. You tend to get creative when dodging the bill collectors. All that negative action can be changed to positive solutions instead. Studies show that new habits can be cemented into your life in just under a month. Start replacing the bad with the good over the next 30 days and see where you end up. Remember to stay positive about your new ideas and your money in general. You are moving forward and not backwards, so leave the past in the past.
