| How to Keep Within Your Personal Budget Tips |
Budgeting is difficult - there is no doubt about that. It can be all too tempting to walk into a store and see a million things that you just “have to have”. But it is that impulse buying that can cause havoc to a budget so it is essential you learn how not to buy. It is just as important a lesson as how to buy. Here is a simple list of things you can do to control your impulses at the store and keep your budget in check.
1. Boredom and Shopping Do Not Mix When you have feelings of boredom the worst thing you can do to your wallet is go to the mall. Window shopping can easily lead to temptation. Trade the department stores in for a nature trail or a long walk with your husband or your dog. Not only will you benefit for the health aspects, you’ll also keep your money. 2. Shop Only With a Mission If you do need to make a run to the store, make a list, take it with you, and stick to it. Don’t get a large shopping cart if you only need a hand basket. You will be less likely to keep adding to the cart. Also, if you have to shop for a gift and you don’t know what to purchase, search online for ideas beforehand and make a beeline to the aisle as soon as you get store. 3. Leave the Credit Cards Behind To avoid the temptations of running up credit card bills you can’t afford, take only cash or your debit card with you when you go to the store. You will then have no choice but to stay within your budget. 4. Allocate Funds for Specialty Shopping Include categories in your budget for clothing, gifts, and other more expensive items and put money aside each paycheck and save up. You’ll be able to hit the stores with only cash in hand and still be able to afford the special purchases you don’t get to make everyday. 5. Put Off Your Decision For a Night If you find something you swear you can not live without, make a commitment to sleep on the decision. It is likely that soon after you leave the store, your desire for the wanted merchandise will subside and you will be better able to make a decision about big ticket items and your budget if it isn’t staring at you in the face. |
