Budgeting Tips This Holiday Season

Holidays just aren’t the same if you don’t spend them with family and friends, making the November and December holiday season the biggest travel times of the year.  Unfortunately while getting home to see your loved ones is good for your family and your spirits, it can put a real strain on your budget.  In today’s economy where just about everyone is cutting costs and trying to lower expenses, it may seem impossible to make that trip.  With a little preparation and planning you can make that trip without busting your budget.

Plan ahead to take advantage of reduced rates

Many hotels and airlines will offer lower rates when you book your room and/or flight in advance.  Since your goal is to save money, be sure to read the policy regarding these reduced rates.  In most cases the point of offering a lower price for advance booking is so the hotel/airline can secure reservations for that period, which means there may be a penalty for cancelling or changing your reservation after they are confirmed.

Schedule your road trip

You may remember from your youth, the joy of jumping in your car for an unplanned road trip.  While the freedom of an impulsive journey is good for the soul, it sure won’t save you any cash.  This is especially true for families traveling with children.  Take the time to determine how long it will take you to get to your destination.  There are ways to cut costs and still get to where you are going without breaking the bank.  If the trip is a lengthy one, you can plan to take turns driving to get the most miles covered in a day which will reduce your overall time on the road.  Pack snacks and drinks for yourself and the kids to save money by not buying along the way.  By taking some time to plan your trip efficiently you will likely reduce the length of time on the road.  The shorter the trip, the less chances you have to overspend.

Trade

If you have pets, plants or mail that has to be tended while you are away, consider trading these favors with a trusted friend or neighbor.  You can save kennel boarding costs or the cost of paying a pet sitter or house sitter.  Of course you have to be willing to return the favor for the neighbor, making it a win-win for all involved.

Make only one trip

To reduce costs, you may have to consider making one trip instead of multiple trips this year.  Take into consideration your work schedule, the kid’s school schedule and of course the schedule of your host to make sure making a late or early trip won’t interfere with other activities.  If all systems point to go for a combined holiday vacation, consider adding a day or two to your trip to make up for missing both holidays.

Regardless of the economy, most families will make the journey home this holiday season.  If you are one of them, take the time to plan ahead and you will benefit by keeping some cash in your wallet AND spending this important time of year with your loved ones.
