Credit Card Agreements and Payment Terms
Make sure you read the fine print so you know what you’re getting into.

Applying for and using a credit card is a lot of responsibility.

You’re responsible for researching to find the right company, you are responsible for understanding the terms and conditions, and you are responsible for paying the bill.

When you are researching your options for credit card companies, it is important that you understand what the payment terms are and what’s involved in the agreement.

Do a Little Research

It’s very important that you research all of your options before you sign a contract. It is a legal and binding agreement that you will have to abide by. The easiest way that you can research different card companies is to do an online search.

There’s lots of websites out there where you can compare interest rates and terms and agreements of several companies with a click of the mouse.

Use this Credit Card Comparison Tool

When you first get your card in the mail, you’ll probably be pretty excited and you’ll want to go buy something as soon as you can, but it’s important that you understand that every purchase you make will have not only the purchase price on the bill; you will also have an interest charge if you fail to pay it within 30 days.

You need to exercise extreme caution when you first use your credit card. It is very easy to get carried away and you will end up regretting it when the bill comes in.

Pay It Off Every Month

Many people over spend using their credit cards and end up not being able to pay the bill at the end of the month. It is much easier to run up a debt than it is to pay it off. Many people have found this out the hard way and have ended up in bankruptcy court because of severe credit card debt.

It is important that you understand that when you do not pay your bill in full each month, that you will accrue late fees, interest fees, and sometimes, maintenance fees. For this reason, it is recommended that you read the credit card contract very carefully, and if you do not understand something on it, ask someone who has experience with credit cards. They’ll be happy to answer your questions.

It is estimated that about one third of all credit cardholders overspend every month and cannot pay their bill. They end up in a financial nightmare that may take a long time to get out of.

What’s the Minimum Payment?

Credit card companies are aware of this problem and will ask for only a minimum payment. It is important that you do not fall prey to this scheme. It may seem like a godsend at the time, however, as time goes on you will find that it is anything but.

When you make only the minimum payment, the balance will be charged up to your interest rate compounded daily interest until the balance is paid off. You can end up owing thousands of dollars on a purchase that was only a couple of hundred.

The only way that you can protect yourself is to make sure that you read the fine print on the credit card contract and purchase only what you can pay for.

Credit Cards are not free money.

Otherwise, you put the credit card company in control.
