Diagnosing Your Debt Disease

Whenever you fall ill and consult the advice of a doctor, the first thing they will do is find a diagnosis for what ails you before they can treat your medical issues. With debt, the is a big similarity with that trip to the doctor’s office - before you can figure out how to get out of debt, you really need a true diagnosis of why you have a debt problem in the first place. Without a true understanding of how you “ended up” in debt, you may never be able to find your way out.

When first starting sliding into debt, it is likely that you were practicing some bad money habits. There are several kind of bad money habits that affect the average consumer, including:

Not having a set spending budget

  • Spending uncontrollably
  • Voluntarily rating the credit limits on your credit cards
  • Taking your credit cards to their limits (and beyond)
  • Repeatedly applying for new credit cards
  • Thinking that credit cards are an extension of your income

If any of these money habits strike a cord with you, you likely have a debt problem. Figuring out which is the source of your debt, can be a big step to making things right financially. One reason many people stay in debt is because they are not honest with themselves about the reasons behind their debts. Without acknowledging what bad habits they continually practice, they are not able to make the necessary changes to their money management habits.

Once you realize and acknowledge the issues behind the problem, you can slowly start to make a financial come back. Controlling your spending habits will be a key component to getting debt free - and staying debt free. In order to help assist you with this first step, you should gather all of your bills and know how much you owe and to whom you owe it to. Prioritize your bills in the order of importance. You obviously need to satisfy the basic needs of life so paying your mortgage, utilities, and having money for food is the most important. Next, list all the other creditors you owe. If you can create a plan to snowball your debt, you might be able to pay down your debt faster, if this type of repayment plan will work for you.

After you have recognized and prioritized your bills, you need to create a workable budget that you must adhere to in order to get back on track financially. Your budget will help you to understand how much money you have coming in and going back out. Once you have constructed a budget, it is imperative you make a commitment to living below your means. This may mean a total reversal in your thinking patterns of the past. Living below your means requires creativity in living a frugal lifestyle. You need to find ways that make sense to your own lifestyle where frugal practices can still allow you to live well. You can start in an facet of your life and keep improving on creating a frugal lifestyle.

Getting out of debt is not an easy road but it is certainly one you must take to leave a more stress-free life. Staying out of debt can be a lot less difficult if you continue to adhere to the financial changes you have already incorporated into your life while getting out of debt. Many will make the mistake of resuming their uncontrollable spending habits once they become debt-free, but that is the easiest road back to living in debt again. Improving your situation once will pave the way to a life-long freedom from debt.
